Manual Handling Training

Manual Handling Training Courses

Practical, in-house manual handling training that keeps your team safe and your business compliant.

Manual handling injuries are one of the most common causes of workplace absence in the UK. Back strain, sprains and musculoskeletal disorders often build up from small mistakes, repeated every day.

Our manual handling course gives your staff the skills to lift, carry, push and pull safely, and to understand why good technique matters. Training takes place at your premises, is tailored to the tasks your team actually does, and every delegate receives a manual handling certificate on completion.

What Is Manual Handling?

Manual handling means moving or supporting a load by hand or with bodily force. That covers lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying and holding.

It isn’t limited to heavy lifting in warehouses. Stacking shelves, moving files, unloading deliveries, setting up equipment and helping people move are all manual handling tasks. Any of these can cause injury if done repeatedly with poor technique.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992: Your Legal Duties

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) require employers to:

  • Avoid hazardous manual handling wherever reasonably practicable
  • Assess any manual handling that can’t be avoided
  • Reduce the risk of injury as far as reasonably practicable
  • Provide information and training, so employees know how to handle loads safely

Employees also have a duty to follow safe systems of work and use any equipment provided. Training is one of the clearest ways to show you have met your duty of care, and it gives your team the confidence to work safely.

What Our Manual Handling Course Covers

Our course balances theory with practical demonstration, so delegates learn both the “how” and the “why”. The course covers:

  • What manual handling is and where it happens in your workplace
  • Manual handling injuries and how they occur
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • Manual handling risks and how to avoid them
  • Manual handling risk assessments
  • Control measures, including when to use mechanical aids
  • Practical manual handling techniques

Safe Manual Handling Techniques and the TILE Assessment

Delegates learn to assess every task using TILE, the approach recommended by the Health and Safety Executive:

  • Task: does it involve twisting, stooping, reaching or long carrying distances?
  • Individual: does the person have the strength, health and training to do it safely?
  • Load: is it heavy, bulky, unstable or hard to grip?
  • Environment: are there space restrictions, uneven floors, poor lighting or steps?

They then practise safe lifting techniques, including planning the lift, keeping the load close to the waist, avoiding twisting and knowing when to ask for help or use equipment.

Are There Manual Handling Weight Limits?

There are no legal weight limits for manual handling in the UK. HSE guidance gives guideline figures as a starting point, such as around 25kg for men and 16kg for women when lifting close to the body at waist height. These figures drop as the load moves further from the body or above shoulder height.

This is why a risk assessment matters more than a single number. Our training shows your team how to judge each lift, not just how heavy it is.

Who Needs Manual Handling Training?

Anyone whose job involves moving loads by hand should be trained. This includes staff in:

  • Warehousing, logistics and delivery
  • Construction and trades
  • Manufacturing and engineering
  • Retail and hospitality
  • Healthcare and care settings
  • Schools, offices and facilities teams

Even office teams handle files, IT equipment and deliveries. If there is any regular lifting or carrying in a role, training will help prevent injuries.

In-House Manual Handling Training at Your Workplace

We deliver manual handling training at your premises, at a time that suits you, for groups of up to 12 delegates. This means:

  • Less downtime: no travel time for staff, and sessions planned around your shifts
  • Relevant training: we tailor content to the loads, equipment and layout your team works with
  • Lower costs: train a full group in one session rather than booking individual places

Every delegate receives course notes to keep, plus refreshments on the day.

Manual Handling Certificate

On completion of the course, every delegate receives a manual handling certificate of attendance. This gives you a clear training record for audits, inspections, insurers and accreditation schemes such as CHAS and SMAS.
